Mike McFadden-Honor Flight Veteran/Guardian

Mike McFadden (Jarhead), who served as a Marine from 1973-1976, recently had the honor of participating in the laying of the wreath ceremony at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. McFadden traveled to DC with Kansas Honor Flight #43 as a veteran and as a guardian. In this group was one WWII vet, three Korean War vets and 34 Vietnam vets. McFadden was assigned the only WWII veteran, Pat Doon (91) from Wichita, KS.
“This was the most emotional experience ever! It was all very overwhelming, especially the homecoming at the airport. It was very different from stepping off the plane in 1976."

“Some of my earliest and best memories as a child were gardening with my grandpa and my neighbor. I started entering watermelons that I planted in the state fair and winning when I was in grade school. I remember a grower offering me fifty dollars for one of my Black Diamond melons.
When I got married I took up gardening again and planted a garden for myself and my elderly neighbor. Five years ago, I took classes and received my Master Gardener license and started a community garden at McPherson College. Ericka Goering-Little Library Steward

Ericka Goering decided to start the first registered Little Free Library in McPherson. Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges are popping up everywhere and number over 40,000 around the world in 70 countries – from Iceland to Pakistan. Now, Little Free Library #38170 at 615 South Walnut Street in McPherson will join the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.
